Designed by New York-based structure and design agency SO-IL, the three-storey, 5,000sqm museum will be the institution’s third location, after its unique area in the capital’s 798 art district and UCCA Dune overlooking the Bohai Sea. Museum has gained a name for itself for all things quirky since it first opened in 2010. Situated within the historic Royal Asiatic Society building at the north end of The Bund, RAM often exhibits works from some of China’s largest contemporary artists (Cai Guo-Qiang, Lin Tianmiao, Song Dong, the listing goes on).
The first floor will host a food hall, business incubator and community area. A deliberate theater will have a balcony space, but otherwise the museum portion will occupy the second flooring. Following its preliminary display in Omaha, the Joslyn Art Museum acquired the work and collaborated again with Red Star on how best to re-display the art work in its new everlasting collection Art Galery galleries for modern art. And in February 2025, the museum will present On Lies, Secrets and Silence a solo photography show by Norwegian artist Frida Orupabo.
